Cyanosis: Overview

Cyanosis is a medical term for blueness (“cyan” means blue) or purple coloration of the skin and other membranes due to inadequate oxygenation of the blood. Symptoms include blue lips, blue skin, blue mouth lining, and often occurs with breathing symptoms (e.g. shortness of breath). It is a medical emergency, as it indicates life-threatening disorders such as choking, asthma attack, respiratory distress, poisoning, pulmonary embolism, other lung disorders, or heart disorders (e.g. heart failure, congenital heart defect). For many other causes, see breathing difficulty or shortness of breath. Cyanosis need immediate medical care as it may progress to respiratory failure, unconsciousness and death.
