Warts, also called verruca vulgaris, are small growths on the skin or other body membranes. They are caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV), which is better known for its role in STDs and cervical cancer. Skin warts can occur on various parts of the skin. Plantar warts appear on the soles of the feet. Genital warts are a form of STD. All forms of warts are contagious, although some people have developed immunity to them.
