Hematuria Overview

Hematuria refers to blood in the urine. The urine may appear discoloured as red urine or pink urine. Causes of the bleeding may be a disorder of any part of the urinary system, such as a urinary tract infection (UTI), kidney disorder (e.g. kidney infection, kidney stone), bladder infection, ureter disorder, prostate disorder (e.g. BPH), urethral disorder, and various other possibilities. Urinary bleeding also needs to be distinguished from other nearby sites of bleeding, such as vaginal bleeding, abnormal menstrual bleeding, external genital bleeding, anal bleeding, rectal bleeding, and so on. Other substances in the urine may discolour the urine (e.g. food colorings, some medications) or cause a different urine consistency (e.g. proteinuria, cloudy urine, etc.).
