Yawning Overview

Yawning is not usually in itself a medical symptom of any major disorder. A person who is tired will yawn. It is also normal for yawns to be “contagious” in that seeing another person yawn will causes others to yawn. However, yawns can hide some serious conditions in the underlying cause of the sleepiness, such as various types of Sleep Disorders. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a particularly bad sleep disorder that often is difficult to diagnose. Acute yawning may also be caused by cerebral hypoxia, which may be life-threatening and has various causes.
